Construction Begins on Second Phase of World’s Largest High-Purity Alumina Plant
Recently, Alpha HPA, an Australian company, has commenced construction on the second phase of the world’s largest single-location ultra-high-purity alumina refinery.
The project, located in Gladstone, Australia, spans 10 hectares and will utilize proprietary solvent extraction and refining technology to commercially produce alumina with a purity of up to 99.99%. These high-purity alumina products are critical raw materials for industries such as lithium batteries, LED lighting, and semiconductor manufacturing.
The second phase of construction will build on the operational foundation of the already established first phase. The company’s first-phase facility, housed in a smaller building on-site, has already been producing a range of high-purity alumina and aluminum materials. The second phase will enable full-scale production of up to 10,000 tons of high-purity aluminum materials annually. In addition to creating 300 jobs during the construction phase, the project will generate 120 permanent local jobs.
Alpha HPA’s high-purity alumina refinery is the first of its kind in Australia, marking the company’s transition from a pilot plant to a large-scale manufacturing enterprise. At the groundbreaking ceremony for the second phase, Alpha HPA's Managing Director remarked, "Today marks a significant step forward for Alpha HPA, the Gladstone community, and Australia’s high-tech manufacturing industry." He added, "This project demonstrates the immense potential of Australian-developed technology and its ability to compete on the global stage."
In May of this year, Alpha HPA made a final investment decision for the second phase, committing to building the world’s largest single-location high-purity alumina refinery. The company also increased the financing for the high-purity alumina (HPA) refinery to AUD 175 million, having already secured AUD 400 million in debt financing from the Australian government.
